"New Year" Update

I have to admit that I’ve felt uninspired to write entering the New Year. Having no urge to write or share something I feel passion for feels strange. Sometimes we don’t like to face the truth, but it’s undeniable and it will eventually send you a confirmation. Well I got it, thank you truth!

So there I was, chatting with my best friend the other day. She was telling me about a dream she had had the night before. In the dream I told her she was in desperate need of a makeover. I listened while she explained the details. As we sat there laughing with each other over her, “busted ass makeup routine,” (those are her words, not mine). By that I think she means, she's been in a makeup-rut. I’d be a bit more delicate about approaching this topic, if she was in fact not looking good. That’s not the case, though. She’s beautiful in more ways than how she wears her makeup. As we were ending our call it dawned on me: her dream was my new year inspiration! What she shared with me sparked an idea. So I would like to thank her for sharing her dream with me. It got me excited to write again. To my dearest friend, thank you for all your love and support over the years. No matter our distance you hold a piece of my heart, busted-looking or not!

When most of us think of a new year it’s all about a clean slate, starting fresh. So I asked myself, why don’t we have the same thought when it comes to our beauty routine? It's great to shake things up. Well maybe some of us do, but many get used to the same day-to-day beauty habits and are possibly wearing the same look as we did in high-school. Now that has to change! We owe it to our grown-up selves not to stay frozen in time wearing the thick, black eyeliner or highly-frosted eyeshadows of our adolescence. We evolve and one’s makeup routine should too.

Update your makeup by finding a new look that you’re drawn to and give it a try. I love to browse my favorite You Tube channels for makeup tutorials to get new ideas, and to hear about new product reviews. Check out Monika Blunder, Lisa Eldridge, and Pixiwoo. These ladies are true professionals. My go-to advice for clients is to start with a beautiful, evened-out complexion and build from there. When you minimize imperfections on the skin, you will look fresh and awake. If you’d like to know tips on foundations, skincare or the “5 Minute Face,” refer to my many previous posts.

This is also a great time to declutter and organize your products. Go through the bathroom drawers or makeup bag or wherever you keep your cosmetics, and toss what’s been lying around for years. You’ll probably find mascara that’s been used forever and has nothing left on the wand, and you ask yourself why my mascara flakes! Throw it in the trash and grab a new tube. You deserve one. I recommend a simple makeup routine. Who has more than 5-10 minutes to dedicate to their makeup look anyway? Look for multi-use products (lip-to-cheeks-to eyes) for fast and easy applications. These can achieve beautiful results, and are great space savers too. I’m also a big fan of a small palette that includes eyeshadows and blushes, and some even include lipsticks. You can create many looks within one palette. Find what works best for you. Experiment with different products, textures, and colors to create your signature look. Have fun, after all it’s a new year!
